Early orthodontic prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
Every child deserves to have a beautiful smile. At Konikoff Kids, we recommend that children have an orthodontic screening by the time they are 7 years old – a guideline supported by the American Association of Orthodontists.
At the age of 7, most children have begun to have their first molars erupt. This establishes the back bite and allows us to evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships in the mouth. Some of the problems a screening may find include:
- Open bite
- Teeth crowding
Many children do not need orthodontic treatment at the age of 7, but having their teeth and bite relationship evaluated early improves our ability to detect and prevent any problems and prevent them from becoming serious.
Early treatment can help children avoid tooth extractions or surgery later in life.
Interceptive treatment may benefit your child in the following ways:
- Reducing the amount of time a child needs braces
- Making sure future teeth grow into their proper space
- Creating room for crowded teeth or teeth that are coming in
- Preventing jaw misalignment
If you have questions about whether your child needs to be screened for orthodontics, please let us know. We’re happy to meet all your dental needs.
